Program Description:
Over the past 10 years, PolicyLink has worked to help create “communities of opportunity” that allow everyone to participate and prosper. Working in partnership with leaders and residents of low-income communities and communities of color, PolicyLink leverages public policy to build communities with access to quality jobs, good schools, viable transportation options, affordable housing, safe places to play, and healthy food options.
During the past year, PolicyLink has dramatically raised its visibility on the national stage, particularly in key federal policy debates, including health-care reform, transportation reform, and many initiatives of the White House Office of Urban Affairs.

Position Responsibilities:
The Press Secretary will be responsible for securing high-profile media appearances for PolicyLink leaders, including founder and CEO Angela Glover Blackwell. The press secretary will target major national and regional media outlets across multiple platforms, including newspapers, magazines, cable television, public radio, and leading blogs and Internet magazines.

Successful candidates will be values driven, self-motivated, creative, resourceful, and preferably have experience in politics and advocacy. Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications, they will be part of a fast-paced team that requires quickly adapting to shifting priorities.

Specific Responsibilities Include:
* Developing and maintaining relationships with top national reporters, producers, and editors
* Creating and maintaining broad and deep media database
* Identifying new media opportunities for CEO and other organizational leaders
* Assisting in preparing and media training selected staff
* Collaborating with other communications staff to maximize impact of media appearances
* Strategizing how to leverage media appearances for maximum policy impact
* Helping maintain and expand existing blog, Facebook, and Twitter pages, as well as other new media opportunities
* Other duties as needed and assigned

Experience & Qualifications:
* 4-6 years of professional communications experience at a social-change organization or political campaign (prior journalism experience a plus)
* A history of and passion for working on behalf of low-income communities and communities of color
* Excellent written and verbal skills are paramount
* Demonstrated ability to generate media coverage and work in online/new media.
* Ability to develop and implement media outreach plans.
* A passion for politics and policy
* Knowledge of the current and emerging new media landscape – and ability to get placements in that sector
* Ability to work and brainstorm within a fast-paced team.
* The position is based in New York, NY. Some travel may be required.
